Mysteries of Gothic Lit.

I guess the apparent genre of the gothic era is mystery and adventure (but mostly thriller type). Why is that do you think? Because most if not all of the books from that century are based around the supernatural. Now thinking this made me think of how we crave the magic today, and thats why we read these things I guess for the same reason people back then read them.

  1. While in my own novel, Wuthering Heights, there have been no mentions of magic, I can still contribute to the observation made of Gothic regarding the elements of mystery and adventure. In Wuthering Heights, the element of mystery comes into play when individuals try to unravel other’s pasts. The interest
(though at times, fixation is more appropriate) can control the pace of the book. As more of an individual’s past is unraveled, the understanding of the character and also the reader grows, causing a surge in interest and attraction, ultimately resulting in a kind of adventure.

  2. I think the reason why books are usually based on the supernatural during this time period is because maybe authors wanted their readers to experience something different then what tehy were usedd to... somehting that gave them shivers down their backs. We like the thrill and adventure.
